You may not ever meet anyone as down on the Redskins
front office as I have been since Danny "The King"
annointed Cerrato his queen. With these two running
the show I am not confident that anyone we hire will be
the right choice. Snyder and Cerrato are looking for
someone who will not challenge them. Danny is the
boss. Vinny is his lackey. Redskins fans are screwed.
With that said, here are my thoughts on the
candidates/non-candidates.
Gregg Williams - The right man for the job. Not hired
because he wouldn't kiss Cerrato's ass. That's exactly
what we need in this organization. Gibbs was able to
keep Snyder/Cerrato in check for four years. Williams
could have at least provided an alternative point of
view on some issues. Williams had a lot of other
things going for him as well. He's a great
coordinator. He's a player's coach. He has head
coaching experience so he hopefully wouldn't make the
rookie mistakes that some other candidates will make.
Jim Fassel - He is still the frontrunner in my mind
although I don't even like typing his name here as a
candidate. I only say he is the frontrunner because it
looks like Danny went out and got the coordinators he
wanted. I understand those who say that if Fassel was
the guy then he would have already been hired. But I
still think he's the guy.
Steve Mariucci - Once the Skins decided to delay the
decision to hire Fassel--and, yes, I'm still convinced
that it's just a delay--they needed to make it look
like they were doing something. Hence the Mariucci
rumors. All of the serious candidates flew out to DC
and had interviews that lasted for quite a while.
Mooch's interview was a lot shorter. He is not and
never was a serious candidate. If he was then why
wasn't he under consideration earlier? One could argue
that the ineptitiude of our front office is why he
wasn't considered earlier. I couldn't argue against
that.
Ron Meeks - No serious interest there. He was
interviewed once to satisfy the Rooney Rule. He was
interviewed a second time for the same reason Mariucci
was -- so that it looked like the Skins were actually
doing something once they pulled back from Fassel a
couple weeks ago.
Steve Spagnuolo - The thing I like about him is that he
is a young, energetic coach who has experience coaching
in both the Eagles and Giants organizations. This
would just seem like an impulsive move move by the
Skins. While it is impressive that Spags' defense shut
down the Pats I sure hope Danny isn't making the
decision based on one playoff run, regardless of how
impressive it was.
