What insurance company will give me a good direct rate on health coverage? Please help!?

July 282009

I love my job, but unfortunately, no health benefits are offered. (I work for an independent contractor as an admin). I know that major medical insurance is important, but I’m afraid that I’ll end up paying way too much, etc. I’m single, no kids, and in my early 20’s.

How can I know I’m getting a good deal, and what company should I look into?

Thank you for your help!

Almost every state has laws that dictate that you cannot get a cheaper rate by going direct to the insurance company vs using an agent. Your state’s Department of Insurance regulates the insurance rates and the insurance company sets the rates so that they are the same no matter where you buy their policy from.

Your best bet is to use an independent health insurance agent (an agent that can work with many different companies).

Shop around and compare quotes from 3-5 different reputable companies (United Healthcare, Blue Cross, Humana, Aetna, etc.) and you will find a cheap plan especially because you are young and hopefully somewhat healthy. Here is some more information on choosing a health insurance company:

Find an insurance broker that sells individual health plans and ask for a few quotes. There are many coverage options. Forget the on-line shysters.

Why do you want to do this yourself?

Your BEST bet, is to go to a local agent, and ask THEM who’s got great plans in your area. They can help balance premiums with deductibles to get something you can afford, AND, they can explain everything to you.

It’s annoying, but I did an online one. I think it was ehealth. Try them out. My advice is do NOT go to ANY local rep. You’ll get ripped off. I had a local rep’s insurance for years. It went up up up and I didn’t even have good coverage. On top of that, I didn’t know I could have lowered a lot by simply applying again.

Other thing is get your coverage NOW because you will be the dreaded UNDERwritten insurance. I trust you are in near perfect health since you are young. Now is about the only time in your life when you won’t be raped or simply not covered by health insurance companies.
